OCCUPY 2012!
Occupy Tulsa Ready for the New Year
(Tulsa, OK) The General Assembly of Occupy Tulsa kicks off the next phase of the “occupation” with all new events scheduled for 2012. Planned monthly activities include demonstrations, educational outreach, and meetings. Different themes for each month focus on various concerns, and related outreach will be organized accordingly throughout the year. The Facebook page is being updated and new policies introduced to improve communication so it’s easier for fellow Tulsa citizens to get involved in these activities and follow what’s going on. The General Assembly continues to meet Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm at Centennial Square downtown and Saturday mornings at 10:00am at the Rudisill Library. All are welcome.
The grassroots movement is maturing, and the association announces the implementation of policies and work groups to facilitate broad participation and improve effectiveness, as it learns from the early experiences of organizing. Occupy Tulsa welcomes the involvement of all concerned area residents and reaffirms its dedication to openness, diversity, and unity among the 99%. The association anticipates that the new policies and organization recently adopted will further the goal of providing opportunities for everyone to join in, however people feel comfortable. Member Laura D. says, “We hope more Tulsans who are frustrated with the system check us out and find ways to get involved. And, to those who have drifted off, please come back and give us a second try. We are doing new things for the new year.”
Improvements made to the organization, including the adoption of policies to better manage the group’s outreach and activities, mark important growth for the group. The new policies are posted on the Notes section of the Occupy Tulsa Facebook page for transparency. The association welcomes input from other concerned citizens on these and issues related to the influence of money on our cities and communities generally.
Past differences and concerns related to the learning curve of organizing – typical of all start-ups – led to a sometimes bumpy start and some confusion from conflicting voices as the movement kicked off last year. The new changes address these issues, so the group can be more effective in 2012. Occupy Tulsa is eager to start this new phase of the movement. This is what democracy looks like.
Occupy Tulsa is an association of local citizens concerned about the influence of money and large corporations on politics and society today. Anyone in the greater Tulsa area who shares this concern is welcome to join. For more information or notices of events see the Occupy Tulsa page on Facebook.
